- The History Department is staffed by five experienced and enthusiastic teachers; three of them teach a full History timetable, while Mr Brodie-Browne, the Assistant Principal and Jane Burrows, the Head of Religious Studies both have one class in each year group. Thus, we have 312 students in sixteen classes.
- Emphasis is placed upon offering students the opportunity to study and extend their own interest in history. Diversity is provided through teaching both medieval and modern history, AQA and OCR respectively.
- We share an office, allowing much informal discussion and debate, as well as creating a 'drop-in' facility for students needing individual help.
- Students are encouraged to see staff as a major resource and to ask for help whenever necessary.
- Although staff are encouraged to create their own materials, there is much sharing of teaching and learning resources and generic teaching units are produced between the team.
- Student contact time is 4.5 hours per group per week comprising three lessons of 70 minutes and one lasting 60 minutes. No shared classes, one teacher per group generates responsibility and a close personal bond. Average group size is 19.5.
- Teaching is highly exam-orientated. The department has strong links with the examination boards. Both Mr Staniforth and Dr Thomson are Principal Examiners with AQA, while Dr Thomson is also a coursework moderator.
- The Department is keen to develop and utilise ICT, students are provided with lists of recommended web-sites, while Dr Thomson produced the teacher's guide to the internet for the AQA history teacher's handbook.
- Exam revision is thorough. In addition to normal teaching, we offered over thirty revision sessions and a modern history conference. All students receive revision notes, past exam papers and work schemes.
- The History field trips to Germany (modern students) and France (medieval students) form an important element in our work of enthusing students with a fascination for the past. Day visits are also undertaken to Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx, and York.
- The department is keen to encourage students to achieve their full potential. Extra lessons are offered for candidates preparing for Oxford or Cambridge entrance. Last academic year five students were accepted to study History, while another four went on to study other subjects.
