The
PE Department makes a significant contribution to College life in three
ways.
Our main responsibility is to deliver the OCR Physical Education A/S
A level syllabus and we normally teach about seventy students in four
groups in both the A1 and A2 year so that we have 140 students studying
our subject.
We contribute a great deal to the College enrichment programme with
a variety of sports and activities for students to enjoy such as aerobics,
circuits and volleyball.
We coach and manage the many College sports teams and we
are proud of our success in the major team games of football, hockey,
rugby league and netball.
The department has two full time and four part time staff and they
each have their own specialist area of work. We are housed in the newly
built "Park Block" with two classrooms and a resource room which doubles
as a staff base where students can access books and materials or come
and ask a member of staff for help. We use local clubs and sports facilities
which are all close by for our practical lessons.
You
can find more information on all the above throughout these pages
PE Department Staff Profiles:
Carl Atherton
Carl is the charismatic (?) head of the PE Department having
gained his degree in Sports Science at Loughborough during the Dark
Ages. He is passionate about rugby league (a mention of Wigan could
seriously damage your health) and looks after the College RL and Swimming
teams, sports he also teaches at A-level along with the theoretical
topics of Skill Acquisition and Sports Psychology. He is married to
Claire and has a son George who is a mini Carl 'with hair'! A good listener
with excellent counselling skills, Carl 'Proops' is the person to see
if you have any problems.
Sue
Young
Sue was educated in Newcastle so she has already achieved the impossible.
She gained a degree in Physical Education at Carnegie before coming
to Greenhead to teach Anatomy and Physiology and take charge of the
highly successful college Netball teams. Sue is married to John with
son Alex taking up most of her time although she still makes an effort
to indulge in her favourite pastime of eating cream cakes and biscuits
without gaining weight.
Symond
Burrows
Symond, or Simon to his friends, is unique in the PE Department in that
he is the only "southerner" in our ranks so it is hard to assess his
interests. He gained a degree in Sports Science at Loughborough and
joins Greenhead to teach the contemporary issues in PE and help to coach
the football teams.
Barbara
Farmer
Barbara is involved in the practical aspects of PE being a specialist
mountain leader and an excellent coach of racket sports. She has many
varied interests but unfortunately she can't stop talking long enough
to pursue them. Barbara has two teenage sons and boundless energy.
Carol
Walker
Carol is our popular hockey coach and teacher of Comparative Studies.
She is married with three daughters and lives in a big house on the
outskirts of Huddersfield. She would love to teach in a posh private
school but has to put up with Carl instead. Carol's main interest in
life is golf and when she can find a club short enough for her she will
be a world beater.
Gillian Peers
Aunty Gillian is a very experienced and popular teacher of Athletics
and History of sport. She is married with two sons and doubles as a
personal tutor. Gillian used to be a great Tennis player until she ran
out of excuses for taking a rest between points and finally admitted
that age had caught up with her.
