Sports Report - January 2000

It is pleasing to report that our teams have continued to be a major force in the world of College Sixth Form Sport throughout 1999. We continued to dominate the Yorkshire Merit Leagues and in our first season of competition in the newly expanded North West Counties League, Greenhead won 3 of the 4 available trophies!

The Greenhead Rugby League team has completed a second successive "Grand Slam" by winning all competitions available to them. In a magnificent year they won the Yorkshire Cup and League, the North West Counties League and the Student Premiership Trophy. In the current season the team are struggling to overcome the loss of ten County players but continue to challenge for honours. Our congratulations go to Jon Bullas who finished the year in fine style with selection for the Great Britain U19 Students who played Australia in Dublin in December.

Success has also been achieved in football when our 1st and 3rd teams finished runners up in the Yorkshire League play offs and Sean Hazelden represented the County and then secured a professional contract with Bangor City.

In ladies sport Greenhead continues to lead the way with both our Hockey and Netball teams enjoying outstanding success. The Hockey team duly won the Yorkshire and North West County titles and qualified for the finals of the prestigious Monarch National Cup in December where they finished an impressive third. Five of the team played for Yorkshire and in the current campaign they once again head the league tables. Hannah Linforth has achieved a top honour with her selection for the England U19 Squad. Our Netball team had another great year and not to be outdone they won the Yorkshire and North West League Championships and once again qualified for the National finals in Brighton as Yorkshire Regional Champions where they finished seventh in the country! Adele Robinson, Vicky Raymer and Emma Philips all attended England Netball trials. A special mention for Vicky who almost became a dual international following her selection for England Lacrosse.

Success was also achieved in other sports. The Greenhead Swimming team won the Yorkshire Relay Championships and thereby qualified for the National Championships last February where they picked up magnificent silver and bronze medals in the Ladies Freestyle and Medley relays. The team has finished the year by again winning the Yorkshire Championships which means they will compete for the National Title at Crystal Palace in February 2000. Three of the team represented Yorkshire in the Divisional Championships.

In addition, our Badminton team is the Yorkshire Champion having won the team event last March with an outstanding contribution from England international Paul Truman.

The Greenhead Basketball team were crowned Yorkshire Champions when they won the play off finals last March and Adele Robinson and Anna Critchley represented the North of England at Ladies Basketball.

Other sporting achievements include Emily Freeman's selection for the Great Britain Junior Athletics team for the European Championships in Rome following her success in the 200 metre event at the National Schools Championships.
