Enrichment - Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is universally recognised and widely adopted as one of, if not the best, programme for the personal development of young people. The Award provides an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development. In taking part participants develop:
- self-belief self-confidence
- a sense of identity independence – of thought and action
- a sense of responsibility an awareness of their potential
- new talents and abilities an understanding of strengths and weaknesses
- the ability to plan and use time effectively new relationships
- the ability to learn from and give to others in the community skills including problem-solving, presentation and communication
- the ability to lead and work as part of a team
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is accessible to all young people between the ages of 14 and 25. There are three Awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Participating students at Greenhead College usually complete the Gold Award. Participants must enrol before their 23rd birthday and complete the programme before their 25th birthday. The minimum amount of time is 18 months, but you have up to nine years to complete the award.
To qualify for the Gold Award a young person must satisfy the requirements of the following five sections: Service, Expeditions, Physical Recreation, Skills and a Residential Project. Information can be found on www.dofe.org to help you decide if you would like to enrol on the Award.
A recent survey of employers found that the Award was rated as the most important enrichment activity undertaken at school/college.
