Education Maintenance Allowance
What is EMA?
- Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 for eligible students aged 16+ and continuing in further education.
- Students may also receive bonuses of £100 if they remain on their course and make good progress with their learning.
- Payments will be made direct to your bank account so students will need to open a bank account before they apply for EMA.
Who will be entitled to an EMA?
New students could receive EMA if:
- They became 16 years old during the academic year 2008/9.
- Their household income is £30,810 or less – parents or carers should advise on this.
- They are continuing in further education in sixth form schools and colleges and FE colleges.
