By now you will have got a pretty basic idea about the subjects and activities available at Greenhead College from visiting us on open days or reading through our Prospectus, but we believe that the most important information comes from the people who experience everything first hand...
Before we dive into expressing how fabulous we think Greenhead is; we think it’s probably best if we introduce ourselves; for all of you who don’t know who we are…
We were elected by the students in January 2011 to become the team of Senior Students who try their best to be the voice of your Student Union.
Here we are, from left to right…
Akash Bhalla, Emma Haigh, Holly Buxton, Jay Jones, John Pearmain, Persephone Rizvi
First things first, we just want to let you know that Greenhead is great and if you are really considering being a future pupil here then that is brilliant news! We’ll thank you now for spending time reading this; although there appears to be a lot of information, it’s all important so read as much as you can and hopefully when you’ve done, you’ll have a better understanding of our college and how we, as students here, feel about Greenhead.
What’s our aim?
We act as representatives of the students here at Greenhead. We work in close conjunction with the senior staff so that students have more of a say in how the college runs and how the students are affected by certain decisions.
Want your voice to be heard? Have an idea? Need any help?
- Come to us!
Or even better… you can now email us on studentofficers@greenhead.ac.uk it couldn’t be simpler, so do get in touch- we’re not that scary! And it doesn’t stop there… you can also pay us a visit in our office which is situated at the back of D17, or leave us messages at reception if that’s easier for you.
Bye for now!
The Student Officers
Rules
At Greenhead College, there are only three actual 'rules' to be followed.
! No student parking in the staff car park;
|
![]() |
! The Library is for quiet study only - so no talking;
|
|
| ! No Smoking on campus |
Here is one of the main differences between our college and school. These are the only rules which have to be adhered to. Rules aren't particularly needed at Greenhead as there is a mature environment around the college, where things fall into place naturally as people are courteous and generally responsible.
Firstly, it is difficult to get your head round being on equal, friendly terms with teachers, although you soon get used to the fact and begin to enjoy your relationship. Each department has their own departmental staff room, although there is a strict open door policy. Some departments will require students to knock before entering, though in the majority of departmental staff rooms (such as Languages, Business, Law and Science), students are free to enter and leave when they please.
Getting to college

![]() |
Greenhead College is perfectly situated in Huddersfield town centre; it is a brief 5 minute walk from both the bus and train station, with the main shopping areas just a 10 minute walk away! |
| HOWEVER, what they don't tell you in the prospectus is that if you are lazy (like most of us), there is the opportunity to catch buses 301, 302, 301A and 302A to Golcar from the bus station, which drops you right outside the college gates! These buses are every 5 minutes or so, and are many students preferred option to walking. |

Important Places
Main Hall - It's the central hub, right at the heart of the college. Loads of students hang out here, during their free periods. However, it can get packed at breaks and lunchtime when everyone tries to squeeze their way through it.
Cafeteria and Coffee Bar - The cafeteria's on the raised platform in the hall; here the kitchen staff serve breakfast from early in the morning (toast, muffins, bacon butties and, of course, the famous 'full monty'), and begin serving lunch from 12pm onwards. The range of vegetarian food is usually excellent and there's always something different and interesting on the menu. There are two vending machines of snacks, a canned drinks vender and a coffee/hot chocolate machine, which are available all to quench that thirst or hunger of yours
G8/C10 - These are computer rooms, where you can come to work, at any time of the day, on college work. There are around forty computers, so there's usually ample space during most frees. However, sometimes teachers book the rooms for their own lessons, so they are unavailable during these periods.
Library - Just inside the main entrance, the library is usually open from 8 till 5.30; there are over 100 desks in the library, plus 12 computers, allowing you to get on with quiet work. But the library's not just a place of quiet study; it's an amazing resource centre, with thousands of books; both fiction and non-fiction. Each month, the library features a new 'Book of the Month', if you’re searching for that extra-special read. But not just books! They keep a collection of the broadsheet newspapers (The Times, The Independent, the Guardian etc.), subject related magazines like 'New Scientist', DVDs and videos which relate to every college subject, foreign language dvds for modern language students, and classical music CDs that you can take home and chill to. All they ask is that everyone who works in the library refrains from making noise, but they're kind enough to let you bring bottled water and MP3 players in.
Reading Room - The reading room is a cross between the library and the main hall - it's a relaxed social and working area, where you can work in moderate quiet during free periods, and socialise during breaks and lunch. During lunch times, the reading room doubles as extra cafeteria space.
New Hall - This hall, above the drama studios, is often used for assemblies and examinations.
D17 - Like the New Hall, D17 on the top floor of D block, is used for music enrichment, assemblies as well as for examinations during the exam period.
Careers and Higher Education Library - This room in college is located in the tutor block near the C block stairs. It’s a store of loads of information about universities, specialist colleges and careers. You can access a folder containing previous students' opinions of universities and their campuses, prospectuses for all the UK's universities, most UK specialist colleges, and foreign universities, books to help you decide what to do or where to go, job opportunities and advertisements as well as specialist computer programmes, as well as a variety of other helpful resources. The library is available throughout the day, and you can make an appointment with one of the staff members for some thorough, personal advice.
Study Centre - Also located on the ground floor of C block, the study centre is a room which provides another area of tuition and quiet study, with specialist computer programmes installed.
Counsellors - The counsellors offer professional help to any student who needs to see them about any issues they have in their lives. They are there to help, and are strictly confidential.
Town - The town centre is only 5 minute's walk away, where there are hundreds of great places to eat and shop. Plus, with your student card, you'll get lots of cheaper deals at the shops. Some great eating places of note;
- The Quatro Deli in the Imperial Arcade and the Hi-Talian near the bus station both serve fantastic Italian food, such as pastas, pizzas and nachos.
- Huddersfield has not one, not two but five Greggs! Can you find them all?
Greenhead Park - Just next to Greenhead College is the park. During the summer, tons of students will spend their days in the park, and there's loads of space to chill out. All we ask is that you keep the park litter free.
Chairs
Persephone Rizvi and Vice Chair: Emma Haigh: The student officers run the meeting, and it is their job to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that they cover everything that needs to be raised.
Secretaries
Akash Bhalla and Holly Buxton: It is their role to record everything that happens during the meeting and follow up any issues.
Treasurer
Jay Jones: he is in charge of everything to do with money and ensuring that the union does not make a loss.
Student Governors
Akash Bhalla and John Pearmain: they regularly attend the governing meeting
Student cards
Obviously your student card doesn’t look exactly like this but it’s just to give you an idea of what our student cards are for and how they will benefit you.

Greenhead student cards are like NUS cards for Greenhead Student Union. A small fee is charged for them on the first day of term, but it is well worth it. We get many concessions at all sorts of places from hairdressers to stationery shops. These are available if you show your card. This saves you a great deal of money. Also, money from the student cards goes towards paying for the leavers’ ball and other events.
Student cards include a passport sized photo, so be warned and keep them safely in your wallet- many people will delight in passing around your unflattering photo!
(More info about what A1’s need to bring will arrive in the August pack).
Student Card Discounts We have tried our best to get as many businesses backing our student card and offer you even more discounts. This year we are proud to announce that you now have even more places to choose from to receive student discount. See posters around college for details.
