Enrichment - Music and Drama

Les Miserables - the college musical in 2004

There is a wide range of opportunities for you in music and drama at Greenhead, whether you are studying them as academic subjects or not.

The Music department is housed in purpose-built accommodation equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including a studio and recording suite, individual practice rooms and space for large group activities, rehearsals and teaching, together with full technical support. The Drama department accommodation consists of a fully equipped studio, a smaller “black box” studio, a workshop / project space, a resource / teaching room and a design workshop.

Rehearsals are always in progress for a rich and varied programme which caters for all musical and dramatic talents and interests.

A tradition has been established for mounting a full scale musical just before Christmas which usually involves over a hundred students both performing and also in backstage activities. Open to all interested students, these high-quality shows have proved extremely enjoyable for performers and audience alike. Past productions include Cabaret, Oklahoma, Little Shop of Horrors, Les Miserables, Grease, Sweet Charity, My Fair Lady, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Guys and Dolls and, most recently, Fame the Musical.

Drama

A wide range of plays and projects is performed throughout the year. Recent productions have included Animal Farm, Beowulf, Macbeth, Arabian Nights, The Lost Art of Being Happy, The Canterbury Tales, Hedda Gabler, The Tempest and Road.

Over recent years the Drama department has run a number of successful projects, including presentations and workshops for Years 1-3 of a local junior school: The Leopard’s Drum, Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and a sea themed project including The Owl and the Pussy Cat went to Sea.

During 2008-2009, there has been a variety of Drama department productions including The Conference of the Birds, an eclectic mix of movement, puppetry and ensemble invention; and Tartuffe a bright and energetic (semi bi-lingual) production of Moliere’s classic French farcical comedy about hypocrisy. In addition, there was an exciting drama enrichment, Town, a piece of verbatim theatre where the actual words of Huddersfield folk were used to create the script.

Music

If you wish to study Music as an academic subject, the departmental section gives full details. The college also produces a Music at Greenhead CD each year which illustrates the breadth of musical activity within the department. We cater for a wide cross-section of musical interests as part of the varied enrichment programme. College Choir, Chamber Choir, Wind Band, String Ensemble, Swing Band and Production Band provide the focus for many of our performances. We tackle ambitious and challenging repertoire and welcome everyone who would like to perform.

Our first performance in the college year is An Evening of Music presented during October with the annual Musical Production in December. The term is brought to a close by a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held in Holy Trinity Church. Our Easter Concert takes on a more formal setting with solo and ensemble performances by students preparing for formal recital examinations. Works by Bach, Beethoven and Handel have been featured in previous performances. The summer term provides an opportunity for students to perform their own compositions to a live audience.
Enrichment also includes: The AQA Extended Projects incorporating the Chamber Orchestra weekend, a Concert trip programme, Grade Five Theory classes and projects with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
Ion the summer term students are able to opt for a week-long music technology project incorporating aspects of sound design & recording as part of ”PaWS” week.
Our talented students often gain awards and perform at local and national levels. We are contributors to the Haydn Wood and Mrs Sunderland competitions.
Whatever your musical interests, there is something for you at Greenhead.
