What is a Sixth Form College

Most sixth form colleges, Greenhead College included, cater exclusively for 16 to 19 year olds. There are over 1800 students at Greenhead. We do not admit younger students, but we create an environment where young adults can make a fresh start in new surroundings, with an exciting social environment and stimulating and challenging lessons.

All classes are taught by teachers who specialise in specific subjects and Advanced level work, so they are experts in their fields: also, because of the size of the college, we can offer you a broad and flexible range of options, whether in academic courses or enrichment options. We can also invest heavily in specialised pastoral and careers support to help you make the most of your time here.

Why Choose Greenhead?

Greenhead College has been recognised as an outstanding college in its last four inspections (the most recent in 2007) and with the award of Beacon status. Our examination results place us near the top of the national sixth form college league tables, with a 99% or better pass rate at A level and a very high proportion of candidates achieving top grades each year.

You can therefore be sure that if you make the necessary efforts to do well in AS and A levels you too will be very successful! To help you achieve your full potential you will be given the best support possible.

There is a mature and friendly atmosphere in Greenhead College created by giving students more personal responsibility, with, for example, no uniform or bells: it has been compared to the 'half-way house’ between school and university or employment. We have few 'rules’ – instead we work together on the basic principle that we should all treat each other in an adult way and respect and value each other’s individuality.

We are strongly committed to seeing all our students get the most from their subject courses and at the same time grow in personal maturity and confidence. As well as high quality academic opportunities we offer an award-winning range of extra-curricular activities ('Enrichment’), and our system for supporting individual students attracts the highest praise from many quarters: it is, in the opinion of Ofsted, 'outstanding’.
