Department of General Studies
What is General Studies?
General Studies is an examination subject taken in the second year,
in addition to your A-level subjects. This subject draws on your knowledge
and understanding of current issues.
All students take the AS examinations in January of the second year. the A-level examinations are taken in June of the second year. Both examinations assess your ability to:
- demonstrate relevant knowledge and understanding applied to a range of issues, using skills from different disciplines.
- communicate clearly and accurately in a concise, logical and relevant way.
- marshal evidence and draw conclusions; select, interpret, evaluate and integrate information, data, concepts and opinions.
- demonstrate understanding of different types of knowledge and of the relationship between them, appreciating their limitations.
Structured learning is supported by the General Studies Moodle site,
and by General Studies lessons timetabled into tutorials in the second
year.
The General Studies courses at Greenhead follows the EDEXCEL specification.
The AS course
This course has two modules each assessed by an examination in January of the second year.
The A-level course
The Advanced GCE consists of the two AS units and two more examinations
taken in June of the second year.
The A-level questions will require more
detailed and thoughtful answers, and will assesss your understanding of
the links between the sciences, the arts, and social sciences.
