The WJEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Medical Science (Alternative Academic Qualification) differs from the A Level courses offered at Greenhead because the emphasis is placed as much on developing practical and transferable skills as it is on gaining knowledge. Equivalent to a full A Level, graded A* to E and awarded the same UCAS points, this qualification will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to university courses and careers in healthcare and medical research.

Medical Science focuses on understanding the human body, diagnosing diseases, developing treatments, and promoting overall health. It integrates a range of scientific disciplines to study the structure and function of the body, the mechanisms of disease, and the ways in which health conditions can be prevented and treated.

This qualification is ideal for students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, medicine, or medical research.

A significant proportion of career opportunities within this sector require degree-level study. When supported by other appropriate qualifications, the Level 3 Extended Certificate in Medical Science can support progression to a wide range of higher education courses, including Biomedical Science, Life Sciences, Physiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Radiography.

You will study six units:

Year 1

Human health and disease (external exam)
Physiological measurement techniques (non examined assessment)
Medical Science research methods (non examined assessment).

Year 2

Medicines and treatment of disease (non examined assessment)
Clinical laboratory techniques (non examined assessment)
Medical case study (external exam).

Entry Guidelines

Grades 4/4 in GCSE Science OR Grade 4 in GCSE Biology. Please note, this course cannot be taken alongside A Level Biology.
