Assistive Technology

Learning Support can advise about and in certain cases supply technology developed to improve your ability to study. With promising and effective applications for Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, disability of many kinds and neurodiversity, we keep up with the latest advances and try to innovate with communication industry crossovers.

Assistive technology or adaptive equipment can take many forms, from small physical adaptations like a change in table height or wrist rests to help steady hands, through to computers, software and input devices like keyboards and mice.

Visual Impairment can be assisted by text readers, modified clocks and watches, speech to text software (as now on phones), magnifiers or any number of modifications; in college some students have iPads which run Goodnotes software, which allows impressive zoom and mark-up directly onto documents or study packs.

We work closely with the local Hearing Impairment teams to ensure that students manage well here. Teaching staff will be guided in the best use of your preferred devices by Learning Support, who will assist with any changes you experience and use all the methods at our disposal to ensure that you don’t miss a thing.

We understand that adaptive equipment can allow you to make the most of your abilities and reduce the effect of disability or impairment on what you need to do here. We want to challenge what you haven’t been allowed to do, what you’ve settled for and raise your expectations of what you should receive. Whether improving ergonomics or facilitating access, we are determined to overcome the barriers that can limit your success.
