Modern Foreign Languages

Why Study These Subjects?

Here at Greenhead College, we offer A Levels in French and Spanish. You will gain an insight into everyday life not only in France and Spain, but also in other countries where your chosen language is spoken.

Do you:

  • Enjoy communicating with others?
  • Want to learn more about other cultures, including films, TV and literature?
  • Would like to work abroad?
  • Wish to increase your employability?
  • Intend to take a year out before going to university and do some volunteer work in a foreign country?

The demand from companies for executives, managers, scientists and salespeople who are multilingual is ever increasing.

Language specialists often get preference over other candidates of identical ability when seeking employment, as linguists develop key employability skills. Employers are looking for engineers, medics, chemists, and specialists in business, finance, sales and marketing who can interact effectively and independently abroad.

Whatever career you choose, it is highly likely that you will one day find yourself working for a multinational company or for a firm with connections abroad, whether in France, Canada, Spain, Latin America or even Africa.

Having knowledge of a foreign country and its culture will enable you to interact effectively abroad. This is a skill that prospective employers actively look for.

An A Level in French or Spanish is seen by some medical schools as a desirable third A Level alongside Biology and Chemistry.

Numerous universities also offer combined courses, enabling you to study your chosen foreign language alongside a completely different subject, such as Engineering, History or many others.
