Greenhead College Student Races to International Success with Team GB

George, a Greenhead College student studying Physics, Mathematics and Physical Education, has enjoyed an outstanding year representing Team GB in international track cycling.

In July 2026, George travelled to Germany with the Great Britain squad to compete at the Junior European Track Championships. The championships featured three main events: the Team Sprint, Sprint, and Keirin.

Competing against some of Europe’s most talented young cyclists, George and his teammates achieved an impressive silver medal in the Team Sprint. Although the Sprint is considered the main individual event, George’s favourite discipline is the Keirin, a fast-paced and tactical race involving multiple riders competing together on the track.

George’s cycling journey began at just 11 years old, and his commitment to the sport has been unwavering ever since. Before Year 10, he was selected for the GB Youth Programme, and at the start of his first year at Greenhead, he progressed onto the Great Britain cycling programme.

Training at an elite level requires significant dedication. George trains almost every day, balancing gym sessions, track training and road bike rides, with just one rest day each week. His training takes place both at home and in Manchester, where he focuses on developing his endurance and explosive power.

When asked about his proudest sporting achievement, George reflected on the unforgettable experience of competing at the Junior European Championships. However, he also highlighted becoming National Champion in the Under-16/17 category last year as one of the standout moments of his career so far.

Despite being the only competitive cyclist in the family, George receives tremendous support from his parents. While his dad enjoys cycling recreationally, neither parent competes. Both regularly travel to events to cheer him on and support his ambitions.

Looking ahead, George has set his sights on the biggest stage in world sport. His ultimate goal is to compete at the Olympic Games and win an Olympic gold medal for Great Britain.

With his talent, work ethic and determination, George is already making a name for himself in international cycling, and everyone at Greenhead wishes him every success in his future sporting career.
