Celebrating Diane Beaven’s London Marathon Achievement in Aid of the British Heart Foundation

On Sunday 26 April, Greenhead College was incredibly proud to cheer on Diane Beaven, one of our Personal Tutors, as she and her family took on the 2026 London Marathon.

After six months of dedicated training – much of it completed on a treadmill due to a significant injury sustained six years ago – Diane lined up at the start of the marathon as temperatures quickly began to rise. The London Marathon is renowned for testing even the most experienced runners, and although Diane felt strong through the early stages, the challenge intensified from mile 15 onwards.

The final 11.2 miles demanded immense determination, resilience and mental strength. Diane was carried through by the extraordinary atmosphere of the race, with supporters lining the streets and offering constant encouragement. Running past iconic landmarks such as Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and along the Embankment made the experience even more special, while the overwhelming support from complete strangers created a powerful sense of shared purpose.

This marked Diane’s eighth – and final – marathon, completed more than 18 years after her personal best. Diane describes it as a deeply meaningful reminder of the power of people coming together to support causes that really matter.

Reflecting on the experience, Diane said:

“Sometimes you don’t get exactly what you hope for. Things can get in the way, like a hot, sunny day in London, but you achieve what you take from it. As one supporter shouted as I went past, ‘Remember your why!’ For me, the London Marathon was a unique experience of the immense power of positive human connection and unity.”

Thanks to the outstanding generosity of Greenhead students, parents and staff, including sponsorship donations and contributions made during our latest Charity Day, Diane has helped raise an incredible £6,500 for the British Heart Foundation. This total reflects the strength of the Greenhead community and our shared commitment to making a difference beyond the College.

Diane adds:

“If I hadn’t worked so hard to get there, I would have missed a life‑changing experience. I honestly can’t thank everyone at Greenhead enough for their support.”

We are immensely proud of Diane’s achievement and grateful to everyone who supported her fundraising journey. If you would still like to donate, please visit Diane’s JustGiving page.
