General Entry Requirements
Greenhead College’s minimum entry requirement is grade 6 in three GCSE subjects. All students must have achieved a minimum grade 4 in both GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics – grade 6 and above in these subjects would count towards the minimum entry requirement.
There are also specific entry requirements for particular subjects, detailed on the individual subject pages of the website and in the prospectus.

Art and Design
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Art and Design, although the best foundation for success in A Level Art is a good grade at GCSE. However if you are creative or have an aptitude for the subject, you may have the basic skills to succeed. To be successful in A Level Art and Design you should be prepared to work hard at developing your work. You should have an interest in creating and understanding art and the determination to develop that interest.
Biology
Grades 6/6 in GCSE Science AND Grade 5 GCSE Mathematics OR Grade 6 in GCSE Biology, Grade 5 in GCSE Chemistry AND Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.
Business
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Business.
Chemistry
Grades 6/6 in GCSE Science and Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics OR Grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry AND Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.
Classical Civilisation
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language. We do not expect you to have studied any areas of Classics before and all materials will be studied in English translation.
Computer Science
The admissions criteria for Computer Science A Level is a Grade 4 in English Language, a Grade 6 in GCSE Maths (Level 5 is accepted dependent on programming experience), with some experience of programming being essential.
We also request that students should have attained a Level 6 in Computer Science GCSE and be already programming (if you have not sat GCSE Computer Science or have not attained a Level 6 in GCSE Computer Science, but are already programming – please note this on your application and apply).
Drama and Theatre Studies
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Drama and Theatre Studies. You do need a proven interest and some experience in drama and theatre.
Economics
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics.
English Language
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
English Language/Literature
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language.
English Literature
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
Film Studies
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language.
Geography
If you have studied GCSE Geography you must have Grade 4. If you have not studied Geography before you will need Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics OR Grade 5 in a GCSE Science.
Geology
Grades 5/5 in GCSE Science OR Grade 5 in either GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Physics.
Government and Politics
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Government and Politics.
Heath and Social Care
Other than the College’s entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Health and Social Care.
History
Grade 5 in GCSE History and Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
Law
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Law.
Mathematics
MATHEMATICS
Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics.
CORE MATHS
Grade 5 in GCSE Maths.
FURTHER MATHEMATICS
Grade 8 in GCSE Mathematics. Note: those students choosing Mathematics and Further Mathematics will study this alongside two further A Levels.
STATISTICS
Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.
Medical Science
Grades 4/4 in GCSE Combined Science OR Grade 4 in GCSE Biology.
Modern Foreign Languages
French
Grade 6 in GCSE French.
German
Grade 6 in GCSE German.
Spanish
Grade 6 in GCSE Spanish
Music
MUSIC (A LEVEL)
Students do not need to have studied GCSE Music but they must be performing at Grade V or above. Grade V Theory is preferred but not essential and can be studied during the first year of the course.
MUSIC PERFORMANCE (BTEC)
Other than the College’s general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study BTEC Music other than to be a confident performer with a desire to perform in front of others.
Music Technology
This course will appeal to students with more contemporary musical interests. You should be able to play an instrument to a reasonable standard and have some prior experience of working with sequencing software. Keyboard skills are desirable.
A Level Music Technology contains a topic called ‘technical numeracy’ which touches on maths and physics content with regard to acoustics, wave theory and some associated calculations. This builds on knowledge from GCSE Maths and Science, and could form part of a study programme with either A Level Maths and/or Physics.
It is possible for you to study both Music and Music Technology at A Level.
Physical Education
Grades 4/4 in GCSE Science OR Grade 4 in GCSE Biology. You must be actively participating in a sport either inside or outside school.
Philosophy, Religion and Ethics
Grade 5 in any of the following subjects: English Literature, English Language, History or Religious Studies.
Physics
Grades 6/6 in GCSE Science AND Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics OR Grade 6 in Physics AND Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics.
Psychology
This course requires grades 5/5 in Combined Science or grade 5 in Biology and a grade 5 in either Chemistry or Physics.
In addition, you will also need Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics and Grade 5 in either English Language or Literature.
You will have to be competent at both essay writing and statistics. 10% of the course includes a mathematical component.
Sociology
