‘Words Matter’ Workshop: Building Confidence Through Words and Music
01 May 2026The Greenhead College English department has deepened its connection with the local community by hosting a dynamic workshop in partnership with the Huddersfield Literature Festival. The event brought together primary school pupils, College students and a professional musician to celebrate language, creativity and confidence.
The workshop featured a high-energy rap and spoken word session led by local artist Rob Bradley, designed to help Year 6 pupils explore the power of words in a fresh and accessible way. Through rhythm, rhyme and performance, pupils were encouraged to express themselves confidently and develop their literacy skills in a fun, supportive environment.
A central aim of the workshop, led and facilitated by Greenhead, was to break down traditional barriers around English and literature. By blending music with language, the session demonstrated that words are not confined to the page – they can be performed, shared and experienced. According to the Huddersfield Literature Festival, this initiative reflects a wider mission to make literature accessible, inclusive and engaging for all.
The Greenhead English department played a key role in hosting and shaping the event, with A Level student ambassadors supporting visiting pupils throughout the day. Staff noted that collaborations like this place the department firmly at the heart of the local community while also providing students with meaningful, real-world experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
Teachers from the English department highlighted that the workshop gave College students the opportunity to develop vital skills, including communication, empathy and confidence. Working alongside younger pupils and a professional artist allowed them to see the impact of creative education firsthand.
One Student Ambassador reflected:
“The youth have a voice that’s often misheard… if you take time to listen, you may learn something yourself.”
For the visiting Year 6 pupils, the workshop offered early exposure to creative pathways and future possibilities. The Huddersfield Literature Festival emphasises the importance of engaging students at this stage, when enthusiasm can be nurtured and aspirations begin to take shape. Watching older students, supported by Greenhead English staff and Student Ambassadors, perform and collaborate helped to build confidence and challenge perceptions of what English can be.
The Huddersfield Literature Festival, which has grown into an award-winning annual programme of events including workshops, performances and author talks, continues to prioritise partnerships with schools and colleges to inspire future writers and creatives.
Both the English department and festival leaders hope the event leaves a lasting impact. For younger pupils, the aim is to spark a love of reading, writing and self-expression. For Greenhead students, the experience reinforces how their studies connect to the wider world and highlights the many opportunities available through the arts and humanities.
Above all, the workshop delivered a clear message echoed by both educators and organisers: words matter. Through the leadership of the Greenhead College English department, and by working together, building relationships and exploring new ways to engage with English, the event showcased how creativity can empower students of all ages to find their voice.
