Here at Greenhead we pride ourselves on our comprehensive enrichment programme, we try and offer a variety of sport and physical activities to cater for all abilities and interests. The emphasis is on fun and making friends rather than competing to be the best. Our sport and physical activities are designed using the feedback received from our students on what they would like to do whilst here at Greenhead.
Below is a typical list of the RECREATIONAL activities that you can choose from:
|Dance (a variety of styles)||Tennis|
|Football (five aside)||Volleyball|
Wednesday afternoons the college comes to life when our regular sporting fixtures take place and we compete against other colleges in badminton, basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby league and tennis.
In Cup and League competitions 2016 has been an awesome year! The netball first team qualified for two National finals, National U19’s in Brighton and the colleges’ finals in Newcastle. The netball second team won the AoC league playing against other college’s first teams. The third team finished third in the same league showing the strength of netball at Greenhead.
However our National success does not stop here! Our hockey teams have an enviable National reputation. Our female team, reached the AoC Sport National Knockout Cup Final for the third consecutive year. Mention the name Greenhead and most hockey teams recognize they have a ‘tough’ afternoon ahead! Regionally, we maintain an excellent standard and enjoy an enviable reputation.
The first, second and third football teams won the AoC Sport leagues. Our success is down to commitment to regular training, teamwork and motivation. Many of our students gain County, Regional and sometimes National recognition. Currently we have National representatives in fell running, netball, hockey, rugby league and ski-ing.
In April 2016, 56 students represented Yorkshire and Humberside in the AoC Sport National Championships in Tyne & Wear. We were one of the largest participating colleges in the country and participated in a variety of sport, namely badminton, cross-country, hockey, netball, swimming, trampolining and tennis.
Adele Crowther has been employed by Greenhead College with the support of Sport England to increase student participation in sport and physical activity. Her role will be to link the College with community sport opportunities in order to widen the college's offer of Enrichment activities for students and reduce the drop out of young people from sport and physical activity. Activities on offer will be very diverse and range from Street Dance and Zumba through to the traditional sports. The activities will have an emphasis on being fun and an opportunity to make new friends rather than competing and trying to be the best. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability and experience.
In addition to this, Adele will provide numerous opportunities for students to undertake and obtain nationally recognised leadership qualifications in a variety of sports. This can be an excellent starting point for any students wanting to pursue a career in teaching or coaching.
Adele has come from Calderdale Council where she was a Sports Development Officer for nine years and is also a former student of Greenhead herself!
