Her Majesty The Queen

To all GC staff, students and parents/carers

Dear all,

I am writing to you regarding the sad news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Most of us and our families will have known Queen Elizabeth II as the monarch for our whole lives, and this evening many will be feeling a deep sense of loss and sadness.

Her Majesty supported the work of schools and colleges and the transformative impact that education has on young people.  At Greenhead College we were very proud to be awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize twice; for our contribution to student monitoring and performance in 1996 and for enrichment in 2000.

We have now entered a period of national mourning that will continue until the end of the State Funeral.  The guidance I have received from the Department for Education this evening is that schools and further education colleges should remain open.  We are planning a silence in commemoration of Her Majesty The Queen’s life to be held next week and more details will follow shortly.

As you’ll be aware, the official date of the State Funeral is Monday, 19 September 2022. This day will be a bank holiday and the College will be closed on this day.
As a mark of respect, we will be holding a period of silence at break time in the main hall on Thursday, 15 September.

If any student feels they need any extra support, they should speak to their Personal Tutor or any other member of staff.

Best wishes,

Simon
