There are celebrations all round as 45 Greenhead College students have secured offers to study a range of disciplines at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Disciplines include but are not limited to: Medicine, History, Music, Languages, Computer Science, Philosophy, Law and Architecture.

This is a record number for Greenhead College, who consistently send more students to these Universities than any school or College in the entire Yorkshire and the Humber region.

The College is a highly sought after Sixth Form College, with students travelling to Huddersfield from as far as Bradford, Halifax, Wakefield, Barnsley, Leeds and Oldham to receive the first class education and support the college offers.

Its continued Oxbridge success comes from a comprehensive support programme which includes masterclasses, interview workshops, presentations by admissions tutors, residential visits, practice admissions tests and most of all, extremely hard working, dedicated students! 

Roshni Parmar-Hill (left), who travels 20 miles from Oldham to study at Greenhead College and has received an offer to study History at Cambridge University commented:

8 GC film studies students were selected for the British Film Institution 16-19 Academy, a competitive and highly sought after academy for aspiring film makers

Based in Leeds, the academy runs various different workshops with leading professionals in the industry including producers from the BBC and Ladbible. The workshops allowed students to explore a range of different aspects to film making including directing, filming, editing and sound, as well as providing the opportunity to use state of the art industry standard filming equipment. 

The workshops all led to a pivotal point in the academy – Film Week. Each student had the opportunity to write their own screen play and two were selected to be made into films during film week. The young film makers spent the week producing the two films during October half term, where they each had an important role to play. The week concluded with a film premier, showing the two films produced at the Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds.

Following the premier the students have the opportunity to gain a Level 2 qualification in ‘Working in Film Industry’ along with 6 UCAS points. They can achieve this by submitting a portfolio of work in which will be assessed by the exam board.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the students involved, particularly as they all aspire to go on to study Film at University.

Each of the students spoke enthusiastically about the academy, describing it as ‘insightful’, ‘educational’ and ‘fun’ and said they would definitely recommend it to anybody interested in film production.

A huge well done to the students, Aruan Lima Santos, Archie Barker, Tom Smith, Molly Kehoe, James Ince, Joseph Heppenstall, Marlene Dodd and Sarah Hargreaves, on this excellent achievement.

On Thursday 20th December, we welcomed back our Class of 2018 to celebrate each of their outstanding achievements and success at the annual Awards and Reunion evening, held at Huddersfield’s renowned John Smith’s Stadium.   

Upon arrival the guests were entertained by the College Jazz Ensemble, allowing plenty of time for a good old catch up before the ceremony begun.

Overseeing the ceremony was Chair of Governors, Roger Bryant, who welcomed the guests and Principal, Simon Lett, who delivered a brilliant round-up of all the outstanding academic and extra-curricular successes the Class of 2018 achieved.

Awards were handed out for each subject area, along with various special recognition and achievement awards. You can find a full list of the award winners below.

We were thrilled to welcome our alumni Katie Mallinson, Managing Director of Scriba PR, to present the awards. Katie delivered a truly inspirational speech discussing future plans, career pathways and achieving your dreams, with a card trick thrown in the mix!

Other special guests of the evening were the Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Gwen Lowe and her Consort, Ken and local MP Paula Sherriff.

The evening drew to a close with an acoustic session by Mud Mask, a band made up of current Greenhead College students and winners of the college’s 2018 Battle of the Bands.
