Greenhead College student, Katie, is preparing to begin an exciting new chapter after securing one of just two Creative Apprenticeship places with Channel 4, starting this September.
The highly sought-after apprenticeship attracted applicants from across the country, making the achievement even more impressive. It highlights the increasing number of Greenhead students choosing the degree apprenticeship route to launch their careers with leading employers.
Reflecting on the moment she received the news, Katie said:
“I was ecstatic! I received a phone call from one of the producers who interviewed me, saying they loved my pitch and couldn’t wait to work with me. I was so happy.”
The apprenticeship will see her working alongside Channel 4’s creative team, supporting content creation and learning directly from industry professionals including directors and editors. She is particularly excited about gaining hands-on experience on television shoots and working in both the Leeds and London offices.
“The apprenticeship will allow me to shadow industry professionals and assist the creative team. I’m most excited to attend shoots, work in the Leeds office and visit Channel 4’s London office too.”
With only two places available, the recruitment process was exceptionally competitive. To strengthen her application, Katie went above and beyond the requirements.
Katie researched Channel 4’s values and public service remit in depth, tailored her final presentation using the broadcaster’s branding, created additional mock-up videos and photography, and completed online work experience through 4Skills and Springpod.
“I made sure I understood Channel 4’s values and showed my personality throughout the process. I also did extra work beyond what was asked because I wanted my application to stand out.”
Looking back on her time at Greenhead, Katie believes the confidence she developed at College played a key role in her success.
“Greenhead has improved my confidence so much and helped me feel comfortable meeting and talking to new people. That really helped during the final interview because it felt more like a conversation, allowing my personality to shine through.”
Katie also credits the support she received from staff and the Careers Department, alongside the reassurance provided through the Believe and Achieve programme.
When Katie starts her new role in September, she is looking forward to collaborating with the creative team, learning how television productions are made and helping create content that millions of people across the UK will watch. She hopes to build an impressive portfolio, gain experience across different production departments and ultimately continue her career with Channel 4.
“I want to have fun and make impactful things. I want to work with nice people and help create things I’m proud of. Don’t underestimate yourself. I applied near Christmas and didn’t hear anything for four months, so I thought I’d been unsuccessful. Then I got through to the next stage. Creative careers are competitive, but if you show your personality, do your research and find something that makes you stand out, you can absolutely achieve it.”

Culture Day 2026 was certainly one to remember! From the student showcase to the cultural fashion catwalk, the day was a wonderful celebration of the diversity that makes the Greenhead College community so special.
Each year, our Diversity and Inclusion team, made up of staff and Student Executive Officers, organises a range of events and activities designed to celebrate the rich diversity of our College community, promote equality of opportunity, and foster greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures and backgrounds across all areas of College life.
Throughout the day, students proudly shared and celebrated their cultures, traditions, and heritage, creating opportunities for learning, connection, and appreciation across the College. The events highlighted the richness of our community and showcased the many backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that contribute to life at Greenhead.

A1 students and aspiring physiotherapists, Orlagh and Adnaan, recently met with a Physiotherapist mentor from Locala Health & Wellbeing to support them on their chosen career paths.
Orlagh and Adnaan, who both study Physical Education at Greenhead College, are keen to pursue careers in physiotherapy after College.
At Greenhead, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive community. Our Believe and Achieve programme is designed to help students maximise opportunities for success and progression in their chosen career paths.
As part of this programme, Orlagh and Adnaan met with a Physiotherapist mentor from Locala Health & Wellbeing, a not-for-profit community healthcare provider that offers a range of NHS and local authority services to support people of all ages.
Reflecting on the experience, Orlagh spoke about her passion for physiotherapy and how it is her “dream career”. She said:
“I wanted to learn more about the career and hear from an experienced physiotherapist about the best ways to gain experience and become a strong candidate for university.”
Orlagh explained that having regular meetings with her Physiotherapist mentor will continue to support her in achieving her future goals.
Adnaan, who has also always wanted to pursue a career in physiotherapy, spoke about how much he enjoyed meeting with the mentor. He particularly valued the opportunity to speak with someone working in the profession who could offer real-world advice and insight.
From providing contacts for future work-shadowing opportunities to explaining the qualifications required for entry into the profession, Adnaan described the session as both informative and enjoyable.

Greenhead College students took on one of the UK’s most demanding chemistry competitions, achieving Copper, Silver and Gold awards.
The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is an annual competition for A1 students across the UK. The 90-minute written paper, set by chemists at the University of Cambridge, is designed to stretch and challenge students, taking them well beyond the A Level syllabus.
It encourages participants to think about science in the way they would at university and provides an excellent experience for those considering studying chemistry or related subjects at a higher level.
There is always strong interest in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge at Greenhead, and this year 62 Chemistry students took part. Every participant should be proud of their achievement, as the competition is renowned for its demanding and thought-provoking questions.
Greenhead students performed exceptionally well. Twenty students were awarded a Copper certificate, sixteen achieved Silver, and four earned the prestigious Gold award. To crown this fantastic achievement, one student has been invited to attend the prestigious Chemistry Camp at the University of Cambridge this September.

Designed to challenge and inspire, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Schools’ Analyst Competition gave A1 Chemistry students the opportunity to step into the role of professional analytical chemists.
Working in teams, 60 Chemistry students tackled a series of practical tasks that demanded skill, precision, and problem-solving. This year’s competition featured three analytical challenges: a back titration to determine the caffeine content of a coffee sample, analysis of the fat and oil content in different hand creams, and the identification and comparison of lipstick samples.
Using official Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) competition kits in our laboratories, students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, demonstrating excellent practical skills, scientific knowledge, and teamwork throughout.
The top three teams were:
Third Place – Sirat, Daniel and Fletcher
Second Place – Fateh, Sahanshila and Ainnie
First Place – Gabriella, Vatsin, Aysha and Massa
All teams were awarded certificates, and the first-place team were presented with a £50 Amazon voucher in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
We are especially proud to announce that the first-place team achieved the highest score of any school or college in the North East region, earning the prestigious title of Regional Champions.

A1 student Sara has achieved outstanding success in the prestigious Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, run by The Queen’s College, University of Oxford.
Open to pupils aged 11-18 across the UK, the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators was launched in 2020 by the Translation Exchange. It offers categories in several languages, including German.
Inspired by the life and work of renowned translator Anthea Bell, the prize aims to promote nationwide language learning. By encouraging students to engage with translation, the competition seeks to inspire more young people to continue studying languages throughout their education and beyond.
Out of approximately 25,000 entrants, Sara’s work was shortlisted among the top 5,400 submissions. She has now been awarded a certificate and a commendation for her German translation – an achievement equivalent to joint second place.
For her entry, Sara translated an extract from Jeder stirbt für sich allein by German author Hans Fallada (a novel also well known in the UK under its translated title Alone in Berlin). With a strong personal interest in historical fiction, Sara approached the task with enthusiasm, translating from German into English.
Sara first developed her interest in the German language during her time at school and has since grown in both confidence and ability. As part of her Modern Languages studies at Greenhead College, she has continued to excel and demonstrate a strong aptitude for languages.
Looking to the future, Sara is interested in pursuing a career in Law, particularly in Criminal or Employment Law. She hopes to combine this with her passion for languages by studying and working internationally.

Greenhead College student Taye recently travelled to Lisbon, Portugal, to represent Calderdale Explorers at an international basketball tournament held from 26 to 29 June 2026.
The prestigious tournament brought together league champion clubs from around the world, with 24 teams competing in the Under-18 age group. It provided an exciting opportunity for young players to test themselves against high-quality international opposition while experiencing different cultures and making new connections.
Taye, who plays for Calderdale Explorers in the West Yorkshire League, has been with the club for three seasons. During his final Under-16 season, the team enjoyed great success by earning promotion to the Conference League.
This season, the Conference League provided a valuable new challenge despite a difficult campaign. Although the team won just two of their 16 league games, the experience has helped them develop and improve throughout the season.
Reflecting on the tournament in Portugal, Taye said his favourite part was meeting people from different countries and learning about other cultures.
The tournament also taught Taye valuable lessons about teamwork and communication. Calderdale Explorers introduced new players specifically for the tournament, meaning the squad had to adapt quickly in a highly competitive environment.
The competition began with a group stage, where teams were placed into groups of three and played each other once. On the second day, teams progressed into finals or knockout matches, ensuring every team continued competing to determine their final tournament placing.
Although the basketball season finished in March, Calderdale Explorers will continue training throughout the summer and play several friendly matches before the new season begins in October.
Everyone at Greenhead congratulates Taye on representing both his club and the College on the international stage and wishes him every success for the upcoming basketball season.
On Tuesday 30 June, Greenhead College students took part in our annual Summer Music Concert, showcasing an impressive range of talent and musicianship.
The evening featured a variety of performances from our Music students, with ensemble arrangements taking centre stage alongside some outstanding solo performances.
The College Big Band opened the concert with classic favourites, including In The Mood, setting the tone for an entertaining evening. This was followed by performances from our BTEC Music Performance students, who put their own creative spin on well-known songs, transforming them into exciting and innovative new styles.
Our College Funk Band delivered modern interpretations of timeless tracks, once again demonstrating exceptional musical skill and versatility across a wide range of instruments.
We would like to thank all of the students who performed and helped make the event such a success. We are also grateful to the staff who organised the concert and supported the bands throughout their preparations. Their hard work and dedication ensured a fantastic evening of live music for everyone involved.
