Exploring the Ancient World with the STOA Project

Here at Greenhead College, a team of our A1 Humanities students recently took part in the annual STOA project, led by a professor from the University of Leeds.

This exciting and enriching initiative offers students studying subjects such as History, Classical Civilisation, Politics, and Philosophy, Religion and Ethics the opportunity to experience university-style learning first-hand. It also provides a unique chance for students to contribute meaningfully to the development of future university courses, giving them a voice in shaping how their subjects may be taught in higher education.

Throughout the project, students engaged in a wide range of hands-on and thought-provoking activities designed to reflect the experience of academic study at university level. Highlights included working with ancient sources and handling historical artefacts such as coins, allowing students to explore how material evidence can be used to build an understanding of the past. These practical experiences helped bring history to life, offering a deeper appreciation of the methods historians and scholars use in their research.

In addition to these activities, students were encouraged to reflect on their expectations of university learning and the transition from College to higher education. Through discussion and collaboration, they explored broader and more conceptual questions, particularly around local and national identity. Students considered how individuals and communities present themselves, and how identity can be shaped, interpreted, and communicated in different historical and contemporary contexts.

A key strength of the programme was its emphasis on discussion-based learning, giving students the opportunity to share ideas, challenge perspectives, and develop their critical thinking skills. Many students commented on how much they enjoyed engaging with complex, real-world questions in a supportive academic environment, gaining confidence in articulating and debating their views.

Overall, the STOA project proved to be an intellectually stimulating and highly enjoyable experience. It offered students a valuable insight into university life, deepened their subject knowledge, and inspired them to think more critically about both the ancient world and the modern one.

Students Prepare for Turing Scheme Trip to Misano, Italy, with ‘Carbon Promises’

A1 students at Greenhead College with ambitions in sports coaching are eagerly preparing for an exciting international opportunity this summer – the Turing Scheme trip to Misano, Italy, taking place from 13–26 June 2026.

As part of this unique programme, students will take part in a variety of coaching activities and educational visits across the Misano region, including a trip to the historic microstate of San Marino.

As part of Step Into Your Future Week, the programme offers valuable insight into the world of sports coaching.

Participants will have the opportunity to coach local junior sports teams, develop their communication skills by learning Italian, and fully immerse themselves in the local culture. This hands-on experience is ideal for those considering a future career in sports coaching or related fields.

In preparation for the trip, students have also been encouraged to consider their environmental impact. As part of the programme, each student has committed to making two ‘carbon promises’ to help reduce their carbon footprint and address some of the emissions associated with air travel.

These personalised pledges reflect a strong sense of responsibility and include initiatives such as committing to meat‑free days, choosing active travel where possible, and making small everyday changes to support a more sustainable lifestyle.

This forward-thinking approach not only enhances the overall experience but also encourages students to consider their role in creating a more sustainable future.

Greenhead College Students Take Part in Games Jam at the University of Huddersfield

20 students from Greenhead College recently attended an exciting Games Jam event at the University of Huddersfield, where they played an active role in testing games developed by final-year undergraduate students.

During the visit, Computer Science students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a wide range of innovative video games and creative concepts. The event provided a unique insight into the world of game development, allowing learners to explore how ideas are transformed into fully playable projects within a university setting.

The experience offered valuable insight into several aspects of the industry, including:

  • How undergraduate project teams collaborate to design and develop games within strict timeframes, achieving impressive levels of professionalism
  • The types of game development projects university students undertake
  • The game testing process, including how to evaluate gameplay and provide constructive, meaningful feedback
  • First-hand conversations with current undergraduates about their studies, experiences, and pathways into the industry

The Games Jam proved to be an inspiring experience, giving students a clearer understanding of both higher education opportunities and potential careers in the gaming industry.

Celebrating Duke of Edinburgh Success at Greenhead College

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the brilliant achievements of our students through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Greenhead College.

This year, 44 A2 students have already completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award – an impressive achievement that takes real commitment alongside A Level study.

At our recent Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ceremony, students were presented with Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates, recognising the effort and determination behind each Award.

Eighteen students have completed their Bronze and Silver Awards while studying at Greenhead, with A1 students receiving Bronze and Silver certificates too – many of whom started their DofE journey before joining us. If students arrive with a part-completed Award, our experienced DofE team will support them to continue and complete it successfully.

We also want to highlight something many future students may not realise: students do not need to have completed Bronze or Silver to take on Gold. In fact, many students on our Gold programme begin at Greenhead without having completed either.

Students can begin their Gold Award from their 16th birthday, and they are encouraged to ask their current school to register them early to gain a head start. The Award can then be transferred smoothly to Greenhead when students enrol.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a key part of student life at Greenhead, helping students develop confidence, independence, resilience and teamwork – skills that are highly valued beyond the classroom. We are incredibly proud of all students who have achieved an Award and those who are continuing their DofE journey with us.

Greenhead extends its sincere congratulations to all students who have been awarded a Duke of Edinburgh Award this year.

Top Tips for Academic Success from Greenhead College

Here are some simple, practical tips to help you succeed during your upcoming exams at Greenhead College.

Use your study time wisely

At College, you have more free periods than at school, and how you use them really matters. You should aim to complete around four hours of independent study per subject each week.

Planning what you are going to do before each session will help you stay focused and productive, while breaking work into manageable chunks makes tasks feel less overwhelming. Keeping on top of emails, deadlines and tasks will also help you stay organised. Once you establish a routine, studying will feel far more manageable.

Don’t just read – do!

Reading over your notes repeatedly is not the most effective way to revise. Instead, you should actively engage your brain by testing yourself using flashcards, creating mind maps or diagrams, or trying techniques such as “blurting,” where you write everything you can remember from memory.

Explaining topics to a friend can also be a powerful way to deepen your understanding. If your revision feels challenging at times, that is a positive sign that you are learning.

Try simple study hacks

Small changes to the way you study can make a big difference to your progress. Techniques such as the Pomodoro method, where you work in focused bursts followed by short breaks, can help you stay productive.

Asking yourself questions like “why?” and “how?” encourages deeper thinking, while practising past paper questions helps you become familiar with exam-style tasks and builds your confidence.

Find what works for you

Everyone studies differently, so it is important to find what works best for you. You might benefit from trying different study spaces around College to see where you concentrate most effectively.

Some students find it helpful to work with a study partner who can keep them motivated and focused, while others prefer working independently. Reducing distractions, such as putting your phone away, can also significantly improve your concentration.

Stop procrastinating before it starts

Procrastination is something many students struggle with, but it can be managed. Breaking tasks down into smaller steps can make them feel far less intimidating, and using a checklist or planner can help you stay on track.

The most important thing is simply to get started, even if it is only for ten minutes. Once you begin, you will often find it much easier to continue.

Look after yourself

Your wellbeing plays a crucial role in how well you study. Getting enough sleep, ideally around eight hours each night, will help you stay focused and motivated.

Staying hydrated, eating well and taking regular breaks are equally important. Giving yourself time to move around and recharge will ensure your brain remains alert and ready to learn.

Learn from mistakes

Things will not always go perfectly, and that is a normal part of the learning process. Instead of feeling discouraged, you should use feedback to identify areas for improvement.

Asking for help when you need it and focusing on progress rather than perfection will help you stay positive. Successful students are those who learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward.

Stay motivated

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by big goals, so it is important to focus on small, achievable steps.

Setting yourself three simple goals each week can help you stay on track, while keeping your long-term ambitions in mind will give you a clear sense of purpose. Recognising and celebrating small achievements can also boost your motivation and confidence.

Go beyond the lesson

You can deepen your understanding of your subjects by exploring beyond what you learn in class. Watching documentaries, listening to podcasts or reading additional material can make topics more engaging and help you develop a broader perspective.

You do not need to be perfect to succeed, but you do need to be consistent. Starting with small steps and staying focused on your goals will help you achieve more than you might expect.
