Greenhead students put teaching into practice

10 Greenhead College students have recently been putting their career aspirations into practice as they take on the Science Teaching Enrichment.

The College’s award-winning enrichment programme is designed for all students to develop self-reliance, promotes citizenship and prepares them to meet the world of work or further study with confidence and commitment. There are over 100 activities on offer to suit the needs of all students.

The 10 Science Teaching students have spent several weeks working hard to prepare and teach practical science activities to year 7/8 students from our partner schools. It was a pleasure to welcome students from Holmfirth High School and North Huddersfield Trust School.

This enrichment has allowed our students the opportunity to develop many vital skills required for a career in teaching including presentation, communication, adaptability and teamwork,  which they can now build on even further and take with them right through university and to employment.

The year 7 and 8 students had a fantastic experience in college and particularly enjoyed meeting our animals!

A Senior Maths Challenge Success!

On Thursday 14th November, a team of four of Greenhead College’s budding mathematicians competed in the regional final of the Senior Team Maths Challenge at the University of Leeds. The challenge involved three rounds of extremely difficult maths questions but team GC, consisting of A1 students Jack Sacks, Fin Cook, James Gibson and Ahmed Mir, shone through and placed 2nd out of 20 teams! This is an outstanding achievement and a personal best for the College as the students dropped just 18 out of a possible 186 marks. Congratulations to Jack, Fin, James and Ahmed on this outstanding achievement!

In other Maths related news.. On Tuesday 7th November over 200 students took part in the first round UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, a UK wide challenge in which the students sit a 90 minute exam consisting of challenging multiple choice maths questions. The results are in and 27 students received a gold certificate, 63 a silver and 65 a bronze! 4 students also qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad round 1, which consists of a 3.5 hour written paper, and 23 students have qualified for the Senior Kangaroo, a 60 minute problem solving exam!

Congratulations to all that took part, and good luck to those who have qualified for the next rounds!

Spotlight on GC Alumna Katie Mallinson

Katie Mallinson studied at Greenhead College from 2002-2004. She is now a CIPR-award winning public relations and communications specialist, and proud founder of Scriba PR.

We put Katie on the spot to find out more..

What was your career aim when you were at college?

I never knew what I wanted to be, and purposely kept my options broad.

What A Levels did you study?

Business, Mathematics, Psychology and German

How do you remember your times at Greenhead College? What stands out?

The quality of teaching, and the relationships with the teachers. I also loved being part of a big community.

Can you describe your path from leaving college to founding Scriba?

On leaving college I went to Huddersfield University where I studied Business Management. Whilst on the course I was fortunate to gain a placement with a Public Relations agency in Leeds. At the time I didn’t know anything about PR but this placement shaped the direction of my career.  At the end of the placement they offered me a job and there I stayed for the next 5 years. I had a burning desire to support niche, complex organisations and demystify the world of PR, and eventually decided to go freelance. Within 48 hours I had my first client and this led me to start my own business in 2013.

What are your standout Scriba moments?

It’s been a challenge, but I’ve honestly loved every minute. I think growing the team to 10, attracting clients from overseas, and building a business renowned for quality of service, passion and a strong culture, have to be highlights. We are so hard working and I am incredibly proud of the results we’ve achieved for clients. Helping to inspire nine other people to work towards the same ‘mission’ I had over six years ago, fills me with a great sense of achievement.

We’ve also recently moved into our biggest office space yet, which we have taken from a blank canvas, and it now oozes our personality as a company.

What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?

Grasp the opportunities that are offered to you, keep your eyes wide open, make the most of every conversation you have with people that you meet, and keep networking! Oh and, don’t listen to people that seemingly criticise you for smiling along the way – you can get along in business while being nice!

96 aspiring Medics and Dentists prepare for competitive admissions process

mock MMIs.jpgBefore the October half term, 96 of our aspiring Medics and Dentists prepared for the competitive university admissions process by taking part in mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI’s).

The MMI’s are a series of short interviews conducted by various Universities as part of their admissions process. The candidate is expected to answer scenario based questions, which generally focus on ethics, the skills the students have and why they want to enter their relevant profession. Students are then scored as per their answer.

The mock MMI’s were arranged by our Careers Department to give our students a taste of what to expect if they get through to interviews and to ensure they feel as prepared as possible on the day of their interviews.

Students were interviewed by our expert staff and industry professionals and received vital feedback of how they performed and the areas in which they could improve. This year we also introduced a reflective session for students. This session enabled students to share experiences and assist with interview preparation.

The College consistently sends many students onto these courses each year and this event just one of many ways the students are supported in the process.
