A space masterclass!

On Wednesday, 30 of our A1 Physics students had the exciting opportunity to dive into the world of Astrophysics, thanks to a visit from the National Space Academy.

Students took part in several workshops investigating spectroscopy and its use to analyse the light from stars and how astronomy has developed our understanding of the universe. The day culminated with an investigation into the physics of human spaceflight and its impact on the human body. We hope this experience has sparked curiosity about the cosmos and inspired our students to think big.

Who knows — perhaps one day we’ll see a Greenhead astronaut among the stars!

Music students participate in rap workshop

A1 Music Technology students recently took part in a workshop to learn more about participation in the arts and creative economy. This is a nationwide government initiative to facilitate the ‘levelling up’ of knowledge in the creative arts sector. The wide majority of our students participating in the workshop are looking to develop a future career in the arts.

The two-part workshop featured local rapper and storyteller Rob Bradley from The Rap School who ran a session on writing rap lyrics and dazzled with his freestyle ability, improvising a rap around 12 words provided on the spot by the students. Students were then given support to have a go themselves.

Noah Burton then provided students with information, advice and guidance about careers and job roles in the creative industries. He touched on budgeting, tax and highlighted the growing nature of the creative industries in the UK.

Many thanks to Rob and Noah, and to all of our fantastic music technology students for being willing to have a go!

Students inspired by GC Alumnus and CEO of Asda Express

Over 100 Economics and Business students recently attended a talk by former Greenhead student, Chris Walker.

Chris is CEO of Asda Express and talked about his career so far, including senior roles at Lidl and Asda. Students saw theory brought to life on a range of topics, with real-life examples on efficiency, business growth and objectives from the supermarket sector. It was great to see a former Economics student having achieved so highly, and still using Economic theory he learned with us!

A2 student Shifa studies both Economics and Business A Level. After the visit, she commented

“I really enjoyed the talk yesterday and found it very interesting listening Chris’ career journey which opened my mind to different career paths I hadn’t previously considered. The application of economics in supermarkets was very insightful and provided me with examples of takeovers which I can use in my answers. Thank you Chris!”

A Piece on the Horizon

Before October half term, Greenhead College had the overwhelming privilege of a visit from Lee Malia, guitarist of the hit rock band, Bring Me The Horizon. The band has garnered 13.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify and several awards, including a BRIT this year in Best Alternative/Rock Act. Speaking to all varieties of music students, he shared valuable insight on the music industry and how he came to fame.

The quartet’s Yorkshire genesis emerged from frequent local mic nights, producing music revolving around the sole motive of getting their friends to ‘mosh’ along, until they eventually were picked up by a label. Malia attributes much of their success to streaming services and social media platforms. However, he references that their rise was somewhat obscure compared to other bands, stating that while some performers are seemingly ‘one-hit wonders’, the popularity of the band’s albums seem to be growing with each new release. Despite forming in 2004, the likes of ‘TikTok sounds’ have bolstered eyes on the group, opening doors even 20 years later. For example, Malia has seemingly picked up entirely new projects, helping compose a score for Canadian thriller Out Come The Wolves, while also being on a global tour and releasing Post Human: Nex Gen’, their freshest album release.

Conducted in a ‘Q&A’ style, Malia’s presentation allowed for any range of question to be answered, regardless of direct relevance to the band itself. He provided answers modestly and fairly, giving the students a clear idea of his success story and how much things had changed since his origins as a teenager, with the help of social media. ‘MySpace’ has afforded Bring Me The Horizon a multinational audience, at one stage placing their band on the site just second to Coldplay. Malia emphasised the difference in funding and attention from the outset of the band’s career, initially performing wherever they could for free, driving, in Malia’s words, “….the car from The Inbetweeners’ and touring in a small van.” And now? A luxury coach, headlining in Japan and Malaysia, allowing their global online presence to flourish in a live setting.

Prevailing through it all, however, is Malia’s continued preference for British crowds. Expressing admiration for the energy the crowd brings, unparalleled to any other nation. Addressing the responsibilities of a family and his band in recent years, Malia expressed a feeling of common misconception towards the workload in making music, describing it as a significantly more peaceful process than assumed, making work and family a much smoother experience, with little actual contention.

Overall, it was once again an honour for Greenhead College to host and hear about Malia’s wide-ranging advice on professions in the music industry, alongside the more professional side of album making and publishing.

Charity Week Gallery

Greenhead College’s highly anticipated Charity Week took place last week.

Thank you and well done to Zoe Nutter and Aalia Bhaiyat, our two student Charity Officers who did such a fantastic job planning and organising the week so successfully. Thank you, also, to all of the student volunteers who supported Zoe and Aalia in their fundraising efforts.

This year, the chosen charity was The Welcome Centre in Huddersfield who support local families in crisis with food, toiletries, and other essential items. We are delighted to share that collectively we have raised a fantastic £1937.79!

Throughout the week there were various activities including the ‘Greenhead Grand National’ staff horse race. Well done to the highly competitive yellow team, Ian Kennedy and Ed Barnes, who were the race winners.

Greenhead’s Got Talent took place on Thursday, consisting of various student performances made up of singers, musicians and even a unique majorette act.  The standard of talent was so high that we really struggled to decide the winner. In the end, two acts were awarded the winning title – well done to James Adams for his emotional piano performance, and to Kaicie Coucill for her breath-taking majorette routine. Well done to everybody who participated, you were all phenomenal.

On Friday, we rounded off the week with our annual fancy dress day. The variety of costumes was so impressive, and it was fantastic to such a high level of participation. Well done to Meg Harling, who won the student fancy dress prize for her incredibly creative Jellyfish costume, and to Liz Jowett and Lisa Norcliffe from our Reprographics department, who won the staff fancy dress prize with their creative theme park themed fancy dress.

Thank you to everybody who contributed to the week, including those who sent in donations of bakes and tombola prizes, your contributions really will make a huge difference for such an important cause.
