Greenhead College Student Represents Calderdale Explorers at International Basketball Tournament

Greenhead College student Taye recently travelled to Lisbon, Portugal, to represent Calderdale Explorers at an international basketball tournament held from 26 to 29 June 2026.

The prestigious tournament brought together league champion clubs from around the world, with 24 teams competing in the Under-18 age group. It provided an exciting opportunity for young players to test themselves against high-quality international opposition while experiencing different cultures and making new connections.

Taye, who plays for Calderdale Explorers in the West Yorkshire League, has been with the club for three seasons. During his final Under-16 season, the team enjoyed great success by earning promotion to the Conference League.

This season, the Conference League provided a valuable new challenge despite a difficult campaign. Although the team won just two of their 16 league games, the experience has helped them develop and improve throughout the season.

Reflecting on the tournament in Portugal, Taye said his favourite part was meeting people from different countries and learning about other cultures.

The tournament also taught Taye valuable lessons about teamwork and communication. Calderdale Explorers introduced new players specifically for the tournament, meaning the squad had to adapt quickly in a highly competitive environment.

The competition began with a group stage, where teams were placed into groups of three and played each other once. On the second day, teams progressed into finals or knockout matches, ensuring every team continued competing to determine their final tournament placing.

Although the basketball season finished in March, Calderdale Explorers will continue training throughout the summer and play several friendly matches before the new season begins in October.

Everyone at Greenhead congratulates Taye on representing both his club and the College on the international stage and wishes him every success for the upcoming basketball season.

Greenhead College Turing Scheme Trip to Misano, Italy

A1 students at Greenhead College with ambitions in sports coaching have recently returned from an exciting Turing Scheme trip to Misano, Italy.

As part of Step Into Your Future Week, the trip provided valuable insight into the world of sports coaching. During their time abroad, students took part in a variety of coaching activities and educational visits across the Misano region, including a memorable trip to the historic microstate of San Marino.

Participants had the opportunity to coach local junior sports teams, develop their communication skills by learning Italian, and fully immerse themselves in the local culture.

In preparation for the trip, students were encouraged to consider their environmental impact. Each student committed to making two carbon promises’ to help reduce their carbon footprint and offset some of the emissions associated with air travel.

We would also like to congratulate all students who were awarded ‘Coach of the Day’ throughout the trip. A special congratulations goes to Florence, who was named ‘Coach of the Trip’ in recognition of her outstanding enthusiasm, passion, patience, and dedication.

Greenhead College Student Making Remarkable Strides in the World of Fencing

Greenhead College student Maiya is making remarkable strides in the world of fencing, successfully balancing her academic studies with a rapidly developing international sporting career.

Maiya began fencing at the age of 11 after being inspired by her best friend in primary school. Although she also trained in ballet during her early years, it quickly became clear that her talent lay in fencing, where she has continued to excel ever since.

Now studying A Levels in Modern History, Economics and Psychology at Greenhead, Maiya demonstrates an impressive ability to balance demanding academic work with elite-level sport.

Alongside her studies, she is also working towards a DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) qualification, a prestigious two-year programme running from July 2025 to July 2027. This qualification is designed to support talented young athletes in combining full-time education with high-performance training and is equivalent to 64 UCAS points, providing a strong foundation for university applications.

Maiya has been representing Great Britain since 2023 at both Under-17 and Under-20 levels. Her international experience continues to grow, having competed in the FIE (International Fencing Federation) Satellite competition in Ghent in September 2025 – her first senior-level event.

Despite not placing, Maiya described the experience as:

“The FIE Satellite competition was both hard and intense, but I learnt so much from the experience.”

Maiya went on to compete in the British Youth Championships, where she secured third place, before taking part in the Junior World Cups in Hammamet, Tunisia, and Budapest, Hungary, in November and December 2025 respectively, gaining valuable exposure to top‑level international competition.

Her commitment to the sport is clear through her training schedule. Maiya trains three times a week, travelling to South Manchester for two-hour sessions each time, alongside twice-monthly training sessions in London. In addition, she attends monthly sports psychology sessions, which she credits with helping her manage nerves and maintain composure during competition.

Maiya is also part of the University of Nottingham GBR Athlete Development programme, which offers high-performance training opportunities and supports her progression within the national fencing pathway.

As well as individual competition, Maiya thrives in team fencing events. Competing in teams of three or four, athletes fence in rotation up to a total of 45 points, switching every five points. She particularly enjoys the intensity and camaraderie of this format and has even taken on a leadership role as a team captain, further developing her confidence and communication skills.

Through fencing, Maiya has formed strong friendships with teammates across the country and internationally. She describes the social aspect of competitions – especially team dinners after events – as one of her favourite parts of the sport, helping to build lasting bonds.

Looking to the future, Maiya is determined to continue her journey with Team GB after College. She is currently considering two exciting pathways: competing in NCAA Division 1 fencing in the United States, having already been scouted, or continuing her studies and training at a UK or London-based university.

With a clear sense of ambition, Maiya has set her sights firmly on the Olympic Games, with the goal of competing at the 2032 Olympics.

Everyone at Greenhead wishes Maiya continued success as she pursues her dreams on the international stage.

Bank of England Visit Inspires A1 Economics Students

A1 Economics students recently benefited from an engaging and informative talk delivered by Greenhead College alumnus and College Governor, Usman, who now works at the Bank of England.

Having studied Economics and Business at Greenhead, Usman’s return provided students with an excellent opportunity to see how their studies can translate into exciting and impactful careers.

During the session, he spoke about his own journey, as well as offering valuable insight into the role of the Bank of England and its importance in shaping the UK economy.

The talk prompted strong engagement from students, with many keen to ask thoughtful questions and explore the topics discussed in greater depth.

A1 Economics student Max said:

“The Bank of England talk was a really valuable experience that allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their influence on macroeconomic policy and how they make decisions using real life data.”

Building on this, Max highlighted how the session went beyond the A Level specification, introducing students to wider aspects of economics and the global financial system, as well as raising awareness of future career pathways.

He added:

Usman also mentioned some topics we don’t get to study such as the storing of different countries’ gold and the creation of stablecoins, which I found very interesting. It was a great opportunity as it provided information on the multiple pathways available after College, from internships to degree apprenticeship programmes.”

We would like to thank Usman for taking the time to return to Greenhead and share his experiences with our students.

Exploring the Ancient World with the STOA Project

Here at Greenhead College, a team of our A1 Humanities students recently took part in the annual STOA project, led by a professor from the University of Leeds.

This exciting and enriching initiative offers students studying subjects such as History, Classical Civilisation, Politics, and Philosophy, Religion and Ethics the opportunity to experience university-style learning first-hand. It also provides a unique chance for students to contribute meaningfully to the development of future university courses, giving them a voice in shaping how their subjects may be taught in higher education.

Throughout the project, students engaged in a wide range of hands-on and thought-provoking activities designed to reflect the experience of academic study at university level. Highlights included working with ancient sources and handling historical artefacts such as coins, allowing students to explore how material evidence can be used to build an understanding of the past. These practical experiences helped bring history to life, offering a deeper appreciation of the methods historians and scholars use in their research.

In addition to these activities, students were encouraged to reflect on their expectations of university learning and the transition from College to higher education. Through discussion and collaboration, they explored broader and more conceptual questions, particularly around local and national identity. Students considered how individuals and communities present themselves, and how identity can be shaped, interpreted, and communicated in different historical and contemporary contexts.

A key strength of the programme was its emphasis on discussion-based learning, giving students the opportunity to share ideas, challenge perspectives, and develop their critical thinking skills. Many students commented on how much they enjoyed engaging with complex, real-world questions in a supportive academic environment, gaining confidence in articulating and debating their views.

Overall, the STOA project proved to be an intellectually stimulating and highly enjoyable experience. It offered students a valuable insight into university life, deepened their subject knowledge, and inspired them to think more critically about both the ancient world and the modern one.

Landscape Architecture Enrichment Project Success

A handful of our students have successfully completed a six-week employer-led enrichment project exploring Landscape Architecture, delivered in partnership with the Landscape Institute and Kirklees Council.

The project was designed by a Landscape Architect at Kirklees Council, in collaboration with the Landscape Institute and our Head of Geography, Adele. Throughout the programme, students developed their understanding of landscape design and the role of a Landscape Architect, culminating in a final presentation of their design ideas.

The quality of the presentations was outstanding, and we are delighted to share that two students, Nina and Zuzanna, have been awarded work experience placements with Kirklees Council’s Landscape Architecture team as part of the Step Into Your Future Week this summer. This is a fantastic achievement and recognition of their hard work.

This Enrichment opportunity highlights the strength of our Geography Department’s commitment to providing meaningful, employer-linked experiences that inspire students and support progression into future careers.

Congratulations to all students involved for their enthusiasm and dedication – and a special well done to Nina and Zuzanna on their well-deserved success!
